Can Electric Vehicles Drive the Transport Revolution in Small Island States?
By Kalim Shah

The transportation sector is a major contributor to the global release of greenhouse gases. Electric vehicles have been widely accepted and island societies are the perfect locations to try to entirely transition to EVs. Their small surface area gives for less range anxiety, while their smaller population allows for the entire population to accept EVs more quickly. There is also higher potential for renewable energy on islands. In order to successfully carry out this type of major transition, there must be some proactive policy in place. Encouraging people to buy EVs through incentives and avoiding any negating policy is essential to convince the population to make this transition.

Exploring Governance Dynamics for Sustainable Energy Transitions in Overseas Island Jurisdictions: The Case of Martinique in the Caribbean

The Island Policy Lab of the University of Delaware and the Université de la Reunion will be collaborating on an exchange educational and research program with a grant received from the Thomas Jefferson Grant from the FACE Foundation.

The grant will be used to explore the governance dynamics in Reunion Island and Martinique to accelerate sustainable energy transition.

Project Abstract
Small island jurisdictions continue to be strained by dependence on imported fossil fuels to run their economies and meet the needs of their societies. Seeking cleaner energy options and further energy independence through transitions to renewable resources such as wind, solar and geothermal have potential in many islands but have yet to reach fruition. Drawing from our experience in assessment of technical renewable energy potentials and policy, regulatory and institutional analysis of energy security in islands, our interest is planning pathways for achieving transition in the particular contexts of overseas island departments and territories. For this the researchers study the French departments in the Caribbean and Indian ocean, the nature of their energy governance and their transition goals, while navigating regional energy policy with independent island neighbors and comparing to U.S and Netherlands island territories in the Caribbean region.
