MISSION OF THE ISLAND POLICY LAB
The mission of the IPL is to provide policymakers, corporate public, private leaders, and the general public with data-driven and high-quality analysis on sustainability issues in islands.  The IPL also provides a shared, open knowledge sharing and transfer platform to strengthen island research and training capacity, and island government policy interventions. It aims to bring the power of academic rigor to generate innovative and applied policy-based solutions to islands’ problems.

ISLAND POLICY LAB IN THE NEWS
Islands on the Climate Front Line: Risk and Resilience 
 
To advance ideas on how small islands can respond to climate change, Perry World House convened its 2022 Global Shifts Colloquium, "Islands on the Climate Front Line: Risk and Resilience".  The Island Policy Lab with other stakeholders from academic and policy institutions discussed how islands can prepare for their environmental and socioeconomic emergency and what the international community can learn from their efforts.

The colloquium report - accompanied by a series of thought pieces rom participants - sets out how to foster local, regional, and global climate change and build climate adaptation across critical sectors.

Conference on Building a Science and Data-based Agenda for Decision-making on Resilience in the Caribbean 
 
Island Policy Lab's Director Dr. Kalim Shah presented at the High-Level Expert Meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS), held in Dominica last month.  Other panelists included executives from the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC), Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREE), Dominica Electricity Services (DOMLEC) among other organizations.


Workshop: Caribbean Energy Transition Journalism Program  
 
Island Policy Lab's Director Dr Kalim Shah talked to young journalists in a workshop organized by the Climate Tracker.  The workshop focussed on developing the skills and knowledge of young journalists while equally deepening their interest in environmental issues in their work. 
Island Policy Lab at the International Conference in Fossil Fuel Supply and Climate Policy, organized by the Stockholm Environment Institute

Dr. Shah presented his work on institutional structuration for enhanced low-carbon development transitions in the Guianas shield producer countries at The Queen's College, University of Oxford, UK in this international conference organized by SEI.

Institute of Public Administration and Island Policy Lab at the Biden School to collaborate on new projects 
 
The Institute of Public Administration (IPA) and the Island Policy Lab at the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy & Administration, University of Delaware have agreed on a joint workplan to benefit U.S island communities.  IPA brings in decades of experience in Geographic Information Systems, economic development, ports and freight management.

New Book by Prof. Saleem Ali, Earthly Order: How Natural Laws Define Human Life

Professor Saleem Ali, Academic Advisor of the Island Policy Lab releases new book which provides an accessible exposition of the latest foundational knowledge on how natural and social systems science can inform planetary crises. Humanity has either tried to conquer or capitulate to natural order, whereas we should be seeking to understand latent structures and patterns that permeate all systems and develop an "earthly order," that is socially functional and sustainable.
New Book by Scott B. MacDonald: The New Cold War, China, and the Caribbean

Scott MacDonald argues in this new book that the Caribbean’s geopolitics have shifted from a period of relative great power disinterest in the aftermath of the Cold War to a gradual movement into a new Cold War in which a global rivalry between the U.S. and China is acted out regionally.  The result of this is a gradual polarization of countries in the Caribbean as they are increasingly pressured to choose between Washington and Beijing.
The International Renewable Energy Agency in Abu Dhabi launches new website 

IRENA launches a new, upgraded website.  The new website with a smart, modern enhances browsing experience.  New interactive features and tools facilitate engagement and the re-organization of the thematic content streamlines access to key data, reports and advice and knowledge on a renewable-based energy transitions.
GLISPA at UNGA77

Congratulations to our partner Global Island Partnership (GLISPA) and the Local2030 Islands Network for hosting the High-Level UN General Assembly (UNGA77) Meeting advancing Island and Climate Change.  The IPL is an active member of the Local2030 Islands Network and GLISPA's energy working group, which are part of these discussions.
