We exhibit an orthogonal set of product states of two three-state particles that nevertheless cannot be reliably distinguished by a pair of separated observers ignorant of which of the states has been presented to them, even if the observers are allowed any sequence of local operations and classical communication between the separate observers. It is proved that there is a finite gap between the mutual information obtainable by a joint measurement on these states and a measurement in which only…

Difficulty of distinguishing product states locally

Nonlocality without entanglement is a rather counterintuitive phenomenon in which information may be encoded entirely in product (unentangled) states of composite quantum systems in such a way that

Measure-independent anomaly of nonlocality

We show that any Bell local state, with a hidden nonlocality that can be revealed by local filtering, is more, or equally, entangled than nonlocal states. More precisely, it can be deterministically

Quantum nonlocality without entanglement and state discrimination measures

An ensemble of product states is said to exhibit"quantum nonlocality without entanglement"if the states cannot be optimally discriminated by local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We

Entanglement in orthonormal bases for quantum systems

Entanglement is a defining feature of quantum mechanics, producing correlations between the results of spacelike-separated measurements which cannot be explained by any local, single-world theory of

Strong Quantum Nonlocality without Entanglement.

The first examples of orthogonal product bases on C=3, 4 that are locally irreducible in all bipartitions are provided, where the construction for d=3 achieves the minimum dimension necessary for such product states to exist.

LOCC distinguishability of unilaterally transformable quantum states

We consider the question of perfect local distinguishability of mutually orthogonal bipartite quantum states, with the property that every state can be specified by a unitary operator acting on the

Entanglement, mixedness, and perfect local discrimination of orthogonal quantum states

It is shown that local distinguishability of orthogonal mixed states can be completely characterized by local distinguishability of their supports irrespective of entanglement and mixedness of the

Small sets of locally indistinguishable orthogonal maximally entangled states

It is given, for the first time, a proof that such sets of states indeed exist even in the case k < d, and holds for an even wider class of operations known as positive-partial-transpose measurements (PPT).

Local distinguishability of quantum states may be determined by entanglement alone

It is shown that the number of orthogonal density matrices that can be perfectly distinguished locally is bounded above by the total dimension over the average of maximal pure state entanglement in

Entanglement as a resource to distinguish orthogonal product states

This paper presents protocols which use entanglement more efficiently than teleportation to distinguish some classes of orthogonal product states in m ⊗ n, which are not UPB.

Entanglement purification via separable superoperators

This work uses the fact that every EPP is a separable superoperator to give a new upper bound on the rate of EPPs on Bell- diagonal states, and thus on the capacity of Bell-diagonal channels.

Optimal Quantum Measurements for Two Pure and Mixed States

An explicit formula is obtained for the entropy defect and the (maximum) information for an ensemble of two pure quantum states; an optimal basis is found, that is, an optimal measurement procedure

Unextendible product bases and bound entanglement

An unextendible product basis( UPB) for a multipartite quantum system is an incomplete orthogonal product basis whose complementary subspace contains no product state. We give examples of UPBs, and

Entanglement measures and purification procedures

It is argued that the statistical basis of the measure of entanglement determines an upper bound to the number of singlets that can be obtained by any purification procedure.

Optimal detection of quantum information.

The most efficient set of operations of that type that the authors were able to design falls short of a single combined measurement, performed on both system together.

Mixed-State Entanglement and Distillation: Is there a “Bound” Entanglement in Nature?

It is shown that if a mixed state can be distilled to the singlet form it must violate partial transposition criterion [A. Peres, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1413 (1996)]. It implies that there are two

Information transmission through a noisy quantum channel

It is shown that different applications may result in different channel capacities, and upper bounds on several of these capacities are proved based on the coherent information, which plays a role in quantum information theory analogous to that played by the mutual information in classical information theory.

Causality constraints on nonlocal quantum measurements.

It is proved that verification measurements of entangled states necessarily erase local information and it is shown that measurability of certain projection operators which play an important role in axiomatic quantum theory contradicts the causality principle.

Properties of a quantum system during the time interval between two measurements.

A description of quantum systems at the time interval between two successive measurements is presented, and how this approach leads to a new concept: a weak value of an observable.

Quantum-state disturbance versus information gain: Uncertainty relations for quantum information.

The trade-off between the information gain and that disturbance in the act of observation is investigated, and the optimal detection method is explicitly found in the case of two equiprobable nonorthogonal pure states.
