We’re proud to be joining The World Bank in launching the World Development Report 2025, the first time the World Bank has dedicated its flagship report to the role of International Standards in its 45-year history! 🌐 The global report underscores that standards – often unseen and underappreciated – are in fact foundational infrastructure for economic development, trade, innovation, and sustainability. It also calls for greater support to help all countries adapt, align, and author the standards needed to drive development. We will continue this momentum with more activation events in January, co-hosted alongside the World Bank. 👉 Read about the global launch here: https://lnkd.in/eGvuC46z #WDR2025 #internationalstandards

💬 “If we measure air quality in Nairobi, track biodiversity in the Amazon, or assess carbon emissions in Sydney, we need to be sure we’re speaking the same language. Standards give us that shared vocabulary. Without it, we risk fragmentation - and fragmentation slows us down.” 💬 Adam Stingemore, Chief Development Officer at Standards Australia In a piece published this week during UNEA-7, Standards Australia’s Adam Stingemore highlights why cooperation through International Standards is essential to addressing the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. He also explores the development of the new environmental standards dashboard, a joint effort between ISO and Standards Australia, designed to bring clarity to more than 1,100 International Standards supporting environmental data and sustainability. 🔗 Read the full op-ed: https://lnkd.in/grJRfHRy 🔍 Explore the dashboard: https://lnkd.in/gTQ-FQiK #UNEA7 UN Environment Programme

This week we are at the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi! Together with Standards Australia and Kenya Bureau of Standards we will showcase our interactive dashboard that brings together 1,100+ International Standards for environmental data. The dashboard offers a searchable, user-friendly interface that allows policymakers, technical experts, researchers, and institutions to explore standards by theme, data type, or sustainability priority. It provides a clear pathway to identifying practical tools that support national and international environmental goals. Because good data enables better decisions for people and planet. 🌏 International cooperation on AI matters. In an article in Apolitical published this week, our President Dr Sung Hwan Cho reflects on the urgency of a shared framework for AI that is open, inclusive, sustainable, fair, safe and secure. "AI is transforming economies, industries and communities," he says. "Yet its benefits will only be realized if trust, transparency and accountability are embedded into the systems that govern it. This is where standards play an essential role." 👉 Read the article in full here: https://lnkd.in/gvgGG_xm Collaboration for restoring trust in media and AI #SeoulStatement #IAISS2025

At this week’s International AI Standards Summit, Stanford and Google DeepMind researcher Maty Bohacek reinforced why the AI revolution must include robust global standards, especially for deepfake detection and content provenance, to guard against misuse and protect trust. His call to action: 🔹 Develop and implement standards for both inputs and outputs. 🔹 Build frameworks that respect regional contexts, user protection, and cross-border collaboration. 🔹 Act now, before the technology outpaces our ability to guide it. It's a message that echoes the Seoul Statement’s shared commitment to safe, human-centred and globally interoperable AI. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/g5ZwprQN #SeoulStatement #IAISS2025

🌐 That’s a wrap on the International AI Standards Summit in Seoul! Over the past two days, leading voices from government, industry, academia and civil society came together to chart the future of AI governance - and to turn global principles into coordinated, practical action. Today’s discussions explored some of the most pressing questions shaping the AI landscape: ✔️ Where global policy priorities are converging, and where they’re not ✔️ How technical standards can safeguard human rights in real-world AI systems ✔️ What it will take to close the global AI literacy and capacity gap ✔️ How we translate the vision of the Seoul Statement into concrete next steps for governments, industry and standards bodies A major highlight of the day was the keynote delivered by Maty Bohacek, researcher at Google DeepMind and Stanford University, which explored 'Building Trust in Synthetic-Age Media: Risks, Standards, and the Path to Accountability.' He unpacked the rapidly growing challenges of deepfakes and synthetic media, from disinformation and identity fraud to democratic risks, and shared cutting-edge advances in detection, provenance tracing and model auditability. His keynote underscored a central message of the Summit: that technical safeguards must be paired with robust international standards to ensure transparency, authenticity and accountability in the age of generative AI. Participants also rolled up their sleeves in the Knowledge Labs, working hands-on with the core commitments of the Seoul Statement - from embedding socio-technical perspectives and strengthening human oversight, to scaling capacity building and advancing rights-respecting AI around the world. ISO Secretary-General Sergio Mujica, IEC Secretary-General Philippe Metzger, and Director of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau Seizo ONOE reflected on how our organizations will work together to carry the Seoul Statement forward and shape a responsible, trusted global AI ecosystem. Closing out the Summit, ISO President Dr Sung Hwan Cho reaffirmed our collective commitment to driving international standards that ensure AI remains safe, inclusive and human-centric for all. A heartfelt thank you to every speaker, contributor and participant who made this Summit a truly engaging two days, and to all those who will now help take this work forward.
