Natasha Malpani, former partner at Kae Capital, has launched Boundless Ventures, a ₹200 crore early-stage fund focused on AI-native startups from India. The fund will invest at pre-seed and seed stages, targeting consumer AI applications, infrastructure, agent tooling, healthcare, logistics, and Make-in-India AI hardware. Backed by Malpani’s personal network, Boundless has already made six investments, including Superhealth, Armatrix, PierSight, Knot, and two stealth AI ventures. Apart from capital, the fund will support founders with storytelling, market access, and network building. “Founders who combine technical depth with cultural fluency will set the terms of the next wave. Jason Kothari’s new startup, Mythik, has raised $15 million in a seed funding round, which it claims is the largest ever in India’s media technology space. What goes into making a successful homegrown VC fund in India? In a candid conversation with Blume's Karthik B. Reddy, Sasha Mirchandani, founder of Kae Capital and co-founder of Mumbai Angels, explores what it takes to build a homegrown VC firm. Building on the themes we began uncovering in Omega Files Episode 2—with Kae Capital as one of the contributors—Sasha reflects on the unique challenges and opportunities that have shaped the journey of Indian venture capital firms in the last decade. Here are some of the key takeaways: 💡Don't obsess about TAM. Instead, figure out whether a founder is adept at expanding their TAM (through new product lines/entering new markets/redefining customer experiences) to deliver outsized returns. For instance, Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal of Flipkart started out by selling books online in 2007, a relatively small TAM. However, they expanded their TAM to create a larger pie for themselves instead of settling for a slice of the pie in a niche category. 💡Focus on capital efficiency as a VC firm Sasha learned the importance of recycling capital in his Fund I journey. Instead of raising further capital to support partner startups at Kae, he reinvested returns from successful exits in Fund I back into the portfolio. While convincing LPs to wait longer for their returns was not easy, Kae was able to invest more and generate outsized returns because of it. 💡Don't fall in love with the idea; Fall in love with the founder. Early in Kae's journey, Sasha learned this lesson the hard way. After getting excited about a promising business idea, they backed a charismatic founder who couldn't execute. "We had this plan in our minds that 'this has to be the future'... the first founder that popped in was very charismatic and we said 'wow this is it' but he clearly couldn't execute," recalls Sasha.
