PHOENIX – Arizona State University started the new school year last week with its largest enrollment ever, eclipsing 140,000 Sun Devils in person and online.

ASU welcomed 140,759 undergraduate and graduate students to its main Tempe campus, satellite campuses and online programs when classes started on Thursday, the school said.

The student body is more than 4% larger than it was in the fall of 2021.

“ASU is growing because there is high demand for knowledge and a need for creative and effective solutions to the challenges facing our nation and our planet,” ASU President Michael Crow said in an ASU News story.

“Students who are ready and eager to expand their intellect and to make a positive impact have a place at ASU. We welcome learners of all backgrounds, perspectives and interests, and we look forward to helping them thrive.”

ASU’s in-person enrollment is 79,000 students, up 3.2% from a year ago. That includes film and new/emerging media students at the brand new Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center in Mesa.

ASU Online saw an even bigger jump, nearly 7% to more than 61,000 students.

International students are flocking to ASU programs, with more than 13,000 enrolled for online or on-campus offerings, up 23.6% from fall 2021.

Over a quarter of the fall 2022 enrollees are taking classes at ASU for the first time.
