About us
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 35 states. ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. This data is fully available to the national meteorological services in the Member States. The Centre also offers a catalogue of forecast data that can be purchased by businesses worldwide and other commercial customers. The supercomputer facility (and associated data archive) at ECMWF is one of the largest of its type in Europe and Member States can use 25% of its capacity for their own purposes. The organisation was established in 1975 and now employs around 500 staff from more than 30 countries. ECMWF is one of the six members of the Co-ordinated Organisations, which also include the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Council of Europe (CoE), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).

🌍🌐 AI for weather and climate: our latest article wraps up our attendance at Adopt AI - Grand Palais. 💬 Throughout the event, ECMWF showcased its pioneering work on AI and engaged with participants across Europe. At our booth, scientists explained AI activities at ECMWF, including in the framework of the EU’s Destination Earth (#DestinE) initiative. The booth also featured a hands-on demonstration of the “Forecast-in-a-Box” concept, showing how a complete AI-based forecasting system can run on different computing infrastructures. Highlights included two dedicated sessions: 🔹 Masterclass “Data-driven Weather Forecasts”, presented by Matthew Chantry (ECMWF) 🔹 Round table discussion “Harnessing AI to Boost Europe’s Climate Resilience”, moderated by Florian Pappenberger (ECMWF), featuring Virginie Schwarz (METEO FRANCE) and Cristian Canton (Barcelona Supercomputing Center) 🇪🇺 The sessions underscored Europe’s strong collaborative ecosystem, turning Europe’s investments in data, computing, and science into scalable AI solutions that support adaptation and preparedness across climate-sensitive sectors. European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF reposted this
This year the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF is celebrating its 50th anniversary. There are many ways to show the tremendous progress that has been made over this time period, and one way is to just “look” at the forecast. This animation shows 10 metre windspeed from the operational 10-day forecast issued at the 1st of December in 1985, 1995, 2005, 2015 and 2025, highlighting the increasing spatial and temporal resolution at which outputs are available. This success story has been made possible by continuous improvement in observing system, data assimilation, model development, computing systems and many more. All this supported by the MARS archiving system which enables retrieving 40-year old forecast data in just the same way as forecasts issued yesterday, an amazing achievement in its own right.

🌀 When EarthCARE flew directly over the eye of Hurricane Humberto, it captured something never seen before from space: the vertical motion of wind, rain and snow inside the eyewall of a Category 4 hurricane. These new observations are helping ECMWF scientists understand hurricane dynamics in unprecedented detail and improve how we forecast their intensity and impacts. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eWuv7mGn
