This would require to clone the whole Linux kernel source, right? Feels like overkill for such simple task

It’s not that simple though, is it? IME having a clone of the kernel often comes in handy, especially when developing kernel drivers. YMMV of course but I find it much easier to find this kind of information from a clone than clicking around GitHub or Elixir.
