Ethical considerations of generative voice AI
- While text-to-speech, voice conversion, and voice cloning AI have many beneficial uses, there are some concerns and ethical considerations we should talk about. First, there's the issue of deep fakes, most closely associated with voice cloning. Now, a deep fake is synthetic media created to alter a person's image or voice to that of someone else, so the resulting media shows the person doing or saying something they never did. Deep fakes can therefore be used maliciously to spread false information. Imagine, anyone with enough training data could potentially clone it and generate completely false audio. This can be used in media and politics, making famous figures say things they never said, or it can be used in phone scams where someone imitates someone's voice asking for money or information.
