VR standards

VR standards

- One of the biggest hurdles in virtual reality development and production is the number of platforms and devices available to develop for. While advances in hardware and overall technology are certainly welcome, the end result is often a variety of different file formats that result in creating a bottleneck effect for developers. This all hinders the overall development of virtual reality as a technology. What is the problem? As virtual reality is still in the early stages of development, virtual reality applications, games and engines, must all adhere to vendor-specific formats. This means that each device can only run vendor-specific applications. What is the solution? Developing and agreeing upon standards at the vendor level creates a cross-platform virtual reality format. This eliminates market fragmentation by enabling applications to be developed once and to run on all VR hardware across the board. Enter the Khronos Group.
