There is a misconception emerging that AI agents will lead to immediate reductions in healthcare labor costs. While AI agents can automate end-to-end workflows such as booking appointments, answering basic patient questions, and performing form completion for prior authorizations, automating a single task is not equivalent to automating an entire job. Nurses are a prime example. Certain nursing tasks, such as care coordination and patient documentation, are highly automatable by AI agents; however, there is a tremendous amount of work nurses perform on the ground that cannot be fully automated with current technologies such as direct patient care, physical examinations, medication administration, wound care, patient support, and clinical assessments. These nuances make full role elimination less likely with current technologies. When articulating the ROI of an AI agent, we need to be both precise and accurate. Automating a task is more often not automating an entire profession. For roles that encompass many functions, such as nursing, AI agents can be invaluable tools for unburdening staff, increasing efficiency, and boosting throughput—benefits that are particularly valuable given current healthcare staffing and resource shortages. The most promising job candidates for full role elimination through AI remain positions with monolithic task structures, of which there are relatively few in healthcare today—scribes, medical coders, and data entry specialists for example. It is therefore unsurprising then that the most progress has been made in these categories.

“AI Agent Washing” refers to the overuse—or outright misapplication—of the term “AI Agent” as a marketing gimmick to describe simple or traditional automation. This practice dilutes the meaning of genuine autonomous AI; damages trust and slows adoption by setting unrealistic expectations. In such cases, a vendor may present a rule-based script or basic chatbot as an autonomous, intelligent AI agent. Mislabeling can easily occur if one doesn't grasp the distinction between agentic and standard, non-agentic AI systems. Gartner throws cold water on the agent craze, estimating that only about 130 of the thousands of existing agentic AI vendors are legit. 3 GenAI myths that make people talking about LLMs sound ignorant: ❌LLMs do a few things badly, therefore they don’t do anything well. LLMs don’t do a lot of things well, but so does a hammer. Hammers won’t help you paint or sand a table top. As more products come to market, LLMs are proving themselves capable of resource orchestration, intent detection, and document retrieval. ❌ChatGPT can’t do it, so no GenAI tools can. No one LLM is the best at everything…yet. LLMs are increasingly specialized, so it’s important to evaluate multiple models before discarding a use case as infeasible. ❌LLMs are only chat bots and there’s no way to manage hallucinations. A few AI platforms have successfully managed hallucinations. NotebookLM is a good example of a GenAI product that’s not perfect, but is reliable enough to integrate into products. Bonus myth: The myth of expertise. LLM training processes and architecture are well understood. However, there are still gaps in our understanding of trained models. Validation and explainability are critical. LLMs require new types of testing to measure reliability, not just functionality. True AI agents are agentic AI, not just dressed up RAG. This little naming “technicality” is responsible for a whole lot of confusion in the market. Here’s why 👇: The buzzword of the day, “AI agent,” is being applied to everything from autonomous systems capable of independent decisions and actions to glorified FAQ bots. The resulting confusion makes it easy for companies seeking the former to end up with the latter, obscuring the full potential of the space. The major distinction between Agentic AI and RAGs (Retrieval Augmented Generation) is TALK VS. ACTION. Agentic AI can take action, reason through complex business policies, and “do stuff for you”. Whereas RAGs can only answer questions. It turns out agentic AI is still slightly difficult to build correctly, so you’re left with what I call THE RAG AGENT FAKE-OUT. AI vendors often resort to a RAG-based approximation reliant on hardcoded workflows, which comes with clear limitations, or requires tons of professional services.
