    My AI lesson of the week: The tech isn't the hard part…it's the people! During my prior work at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), we talked a lot about how any technology, whether a new drug or a new vaccine or a new information tool, would face challenges with how to integrate into the complex human systems that alway at play in healthcare. As I get deeper and deeper into AI, I am not surprised to see that those same challenges exist with this cadre of technology as well. It’s not the tech that limits us; the real complexity lies in driving adoption across diverse teams, workflows, and mindsets. And it’s not just implementation alone that will get to real ROI from AI—it’s the changes that will occur to our workflows that will generate the value. That’s why we are thinking differently about how to approach change management. We’re approaching the workflow integration with the same discipline and structure as any core system build. Our framework is designed to reduce friction, build momentum, and align people with outcomes from day one. Here’s the 5-point plan for how we're making that happen with health systems today: 🔹 AI Champion Program: We designate and train department-level champions who lead adoption efforts within their teams. These individuals become trusted internal experts, reducing dependency on central support and accelerating change. 🔹 An AI Academy: We produce concise, role-specific, training modules to deliver just-in-time knowledge to help all users get the most out of the gen AI tools that their systems are provisioning. 5-10 min modules ensures relevance and reduces training fatigue.  🔹 Staged Rollout: We don’t go live everywhere at once. Instead, we're beginning with an initial few locations/teams, refine based on feedback, and expand with proof points in hand. This staged approach minimizes risk and maximizes learning. 🔹 Feedback Loops: Change is not a one-way push. Host regular forums to capture insights from frontline users, close gaps, and refine processes continuously. Listening and modifying is part of the deployment strategy. 🔹 Visible Metrics: Transparent team or dept-based dashboards track progress and highlight wins. When staff can see measurable improvement—and their role in driving it—engagement improves dramatically. This isn’t workflow mapping. This is operational transformation—designed for scale, grounded in human behavior, and built to last. Technology will continue to evolve. But real leverage comes from aligning your people behind the change. Here are four key considerations: 1. Verification Overload - LLMs might produce coherent summaries, but “coherent” doesn’t always mean correct. Manually double-checking AI-generated notes or recommendations becomes an extra task on an already packed schedule. 2. Trust Erosion - Even a single AI-driven mistake—like the wrong dosage—can compromise patient safety. Errors that go unnoticed fracture clinicians’ trust and force them to re-verify every recommendation, negating AI’s efficiency. 3. Burnout Concerns - AI is often touted as a remedy for burnout. Yet if it’s poorly integrated or frequently incorrect, clinicians end up verifying and correcting even more, adding mental strain instead of relieving it. 4. Workflow Hurdles LLMs excel in flexible, open-ended tasks, but healthcare requires precision, consistency, and structured data.     Are you looking for best practices in the adoption of AI for healthcare? Get six tips from Kiran Mysore, the chief data and analytics officer at Sutter Health. ·     You should not think about technology first and the allure of AI. You need to lead with the business problem or the clinical care problem you are trying to solve with AI. In some cases, the answer to the problem may not be AI. ·     In cases where AI is a solution to a problem, you need to be very specific about the outcome you want to drive with AI. You must focus on integrating AI into clinical workflows, measuring the outcomes over time, and understanding the improvements you are making against a baseline. ·     AI is very complex. It is rarely a turn-key solution, where you adopt a model and expect it to work. It needs a lot of good, clean data. It needs a lot of talented and skilled professionals to make it work the right way. It needs to be trusted and dependable, which means you must tune the models well so they can function at the highest level. ·     You should try to think about scale on Day 1. Don't wait until a pilot is done, then think about the next step because scaling takes a long time. If you don't think about scale and performance on Day 1, you lose momentum. ·     Utilize best practices across the board. Talk with other healthcare organizations that have adopted AI models to learn from them, so you can capitalize on opportunities and avoid making mistakes. ·     The biggest pitfall is being too optimistic about AI. We are in the early days of AI initiatives. It is rarely going to work exactly as advertised because every health system is unique. You must think about taking an AI capability and challenging the capability. The pitfall is thinking that AI is a silver bullet and it will work for everyone.     “First fire bullets, then fire cannonballs.” - Jim Collins Waiting for the “perfect AI strategy” is like waiting to become a professional swimmer before getting in the pool. 🏊♂️ Every day I speak with healthcare leaders paralyzed by the same question: “How do we implement AI in our organization when we don’t know where to start?” The answer isn’t building a comprehensive, perfect AI strategy from day one. It’s about firing bullets before cannonballs. As Jim Collins taught us in Good to Great, successful organizations don’t bet the farm on untested big ideas. They start with small, low-risk experiments (bullets) to learn what works, then commit resources to proven concepts (cannonballs).   • The AI gave a clear diagnosis. The doctor trusted it. The only problem? The AI was wrong. A year ago, I was called in to consult for a global healthcare company. They had implemented an AI diagnostic system to help doctors analyze thousands of patient records rapidly. The promise? Faster disease detection, better healthcare. Then came the wake-up call. The AI flagged a case with a high probability of a rare autoimmune disorder. The doctor, trusting the system, recommended an aggressive treatment plan. But something felt off. When I was brought in to review, we discovered the AI had misinterpreted an MRI anomaly. The patient had an entirely different condition—one that didn’t require aggressive treatment. A near-miss that could have had serious consequences. As AI becomes more integrated into decision-making, here are three critical principles for responsible implementation: - Set Clear Boundaries Define where AI assistance ends and human decision-making begins. Establish accountability protocols to avoid blind trust. - Build Trust Gradually Start with low-risk implementations. Validate critical AI outputs with human intervention. The difference between full recovery and lifelong disability often comes down to speed, accuracy, and access to the right treatment. Symptoms can appear suddenly: facial droop, arm weakness, slurred speech, loss of balance, or vision changes. These are moments of crisis where rapid recognition and immediate medical attention save lives. Despite global awareness campaigns, many patients arrive too late for the most effective interventions like clot busting drugs or thrombectomy. This is where artificial intelligence can make a profound difference. 1. Early Detection Algorithms trained on millions of CT and MRI scans can detect subtle changes in brain tissue faster than the human eye. This can alert clinicians immediately, even in hospitals without a full-time neuroradiologist. 2. Triage and Workflow Optimization AI systems can prioritize cases, send automatic alerts, and ensure that stroke teams are activated the moment a scan is uploaded. This reduces the “door-to-needle” time and helps align every step of care. 3. Predictive Analytics By analyzing patient history, vital signs, and lab results, AI can identify those at highest risk before a stroke occurs. This opens the door to prevention strategies and early interventions. 4. Telemedicine Integration AI-powered stroke networks can extend expert care to rural and underserved regions. A patient in a small town can receive the same level of diagnostic precision as one in a major academic hospital. 5. Rehabilitation Support After a stroke, recovery is a marathon. AI-driven rehabilitation tools, including virtual reality and motion tracking, can personalize therapy and track progress, improving outcomes over time. The goal is clear: no patient should suffer preventable disability because the system was too slow to act.
