Why the Smartest AI Still Cannot Replace a Radiologist or Drive One to Work In 2015, Elon Musk predicted that full self-driving cars would be available within two years. In 2016, Geoffrey Hinton suggested radiologists would be obsolete in five. It is now 2024. Radiologists are still employed and driving themselves to work in regular cars. This is not a failure of artificial intelligence. It is a misunderstanding of how different types of intelligence emerge and how task complexity works. Modern AI systems are excellent at narrow, well-bounded problems. Convolutional neural networks outperform humans in image classification benchmarks. Transformers can generate coherent text at scale. But when these models are deployed in real-world environments, the limitations become clear. They break under distribution shifts, they cannot reason causally, and they struggle with embodied tasks like navigation or physical interaction. The reason is structural. Tasks that humans have evolved to perform over millions of years, such as perception, motor coordination, and context adaptation, require deeply integrated sensorimotor intelligence that current models do not possess. In contrast, symbolic tasks that are relatively recent in human history, like solving equations, writing, or identifying tumors in an image are easier to formalize and automate. This is the Moravec Paradox in action: What feels effortless to humans is often computationally complex. What feels hard for humans can be trivial for machines. Radiologists have not been replaced. They have been augmented. The highest-performing clinical workflows now combine human expertise with algorithmic assistance. Similarly, self-driving systems remain stuck at partial automation levels because general-purpose autonomy in dynamic environments is still an open challenge in AI. The future of work is not full replacement, but decomposition. Cognitive tasks will be split into those that can be encoded in algorithms and those that cannot. The real disruption will come not from machines that replace us, but from the redefinition of what it means to think, decide, and act in a world of intelligent systems.

It’s impressive, yet I can’t shake the feeling that something vital is being overlooked, and it could fracture the connection between machine intelligence and human understanding. We’ve entered a new age, the Physical Turing Test, stated Jim Fan. Robots aren’t just reasoning anymore, they’re acting. Cleaning, navigating, and handling real-world environments. Is the goal now, to interact physically and yet, not know it’s physical robot your interacting with? Although, this does seem like the path we are on now… Here’s the paradox: 🔹 LLMs don’t have enough physical data 🔹 Robots don’t have enough human data 🔹 Both are relying on simulation to fill the gap What if when AI simulates from scratch, it doesn’t, or won’t look human. It will be optimized, efficient, and yet seemingly unfamiliar to us. Recognizable only to itself. Humans don’t just look for output, we look for ourselves. In every movement, in every choice, in every process, we search for familiarity. So how do we make physical AI relatable, trustworthy, and acutely human-aware? I think we will end up needing to bring people into the loop, into the training, and into the data… 🔹 Imagine a future where displaced workers, students, and upskilled professionals are employed inside virtual environments, training physical AI 🔹 Every gesture, mistake, and routine becomes part of the dataset 🔹 The goal isn’t just to move like a human, it’s to understand humans Because it’s not just creativity and flexibility that shape human behavior, it’s also culture and environment. Sometimes culture is just tradition, passed down without explanation. Other times, it’s essential. Skip a step in a cultural process, and the result might be unsafe, offensive, or harmful. Simulation can’t teach that. It won’t know why a dish is rinsed before it’s seasoned, or why a tool is placed a certain way after use. These patterns aren’t errors, they are encoded logic passed through human generations. So before we let robots create their own rulebooks, we have to show them ours. This video is a great example of Moravec’s Paradox. Hans Moravec wrote in 1988, "it is comparatively easy to make computers exhibit adult level performance on intelligence tests or playing checkers, and difficult or impossible to give them the skills of a one-year-old when it comes to perception and mobility". At Cobot, our physical AI team is focused on the challenge of learning through self-play. In this demonstration that looks deceptively simple, our robot is playing with this kids toy, and learning in real-time how it works, then getting better. This is not imitation learning, nor is there a reward function for this toy. We’ve taught the system to play and learn by playing. We’re not ready to perform open-heart surgery anytime soon, but the principles are the same. To truly generalize to the real world, we need to be able to learn how to deal with unseen situations in the physical world and figure out how they work… without millions of hours of prior training.
