The other day a smart human said they found my tone of voice very distinctive. I was chuffed cos one of the holy grails of marketing is to stand out. Then they raised an interesting point. They talked about someone I work with and said they could tell when I’d written content for them. They weren’t sure if it was preferable to have that, or to work with a copywriter whose style can adapt to the tone of voice of the person they’re seeking to communicate for. So, this is a hecking great thing to consider if you’re hiring a writer, The reality is, very little of the writing I do for coaches and consultants sounds like me. I do a tonne of website copy and ghost writing where I become invisible and channel someone else's voice. The goal is to make their content sound like them at their eloquent best. I’m good at it. The most common feedback I get is people saying they’re blown away with how much their website copy or their LinkedIn posts sound like them. When I’m not being someone’s voice puppet, I’m piecing sales pages together using your customer language. It’s a bit like doing a jigsaw and bringing a multiplicity of voices together into a coherent whole. And, occasionally, people work with me because they want to borrow aspects of my voice. They like the way I write, and they want to dial up their irreverence or their humour. Those jobs are fun, because I get to play more. But they’re pretty rare. Because I specialise in working with solopreneur coaches and consultants, 85%+ of the writing I do is about making someone else’s personality shine. So, my correspondent raises a terrific point. Any copywriter worth their salt should be able to adapt their style to the voice of the person they’re communicating for. And don’t think that just because a writer has a distinctive voice of their own, they won’t be able to channel your voice. Good copywriters are the ultimate chameleons. Ask for a few samples of projects where the writer used someone else’s voice so you can see the range they’re capable of.
