Tech succeeds wildly when it unlocks latent demand by either 10x convenience or 1/10 cost or a combo of 3x and 1/3, not by serving what demand already exists. - Uber tapped into riders who would not usually be frequent cab users as well as drivers who wouldn’t invest in the process for a medallion - Airbnb tapped into travellers who wanted to travel more but wanted a better experience than couchsirfing. On the host side also they unlocked people who would not be operating bnbs if Airbnb did not exist. - Google advertisers are still mostly SMBs who would not advertise online without G - Facebook users were people who would not have set up personal websites or Geo cities pages - WhatsApp users would not send so many messages if they were charged SMS rates - Before Apple, computers were machines for office works to do official things. Apple computers went after designers, students and people doing things for themselves. iPod, iPhone, iPad all went after markets that didn’t exist yet but were huge

Summary
Case studies of tech success showcase real-world examples where technology has helped organizations solve problems, reach new customers, or transform their operations, often in surprising and powerful ways. These stories help illustrate how innovative thinking and the right tools can drive significant growth and create new opportunities, even in crowded or challenging markets.
- Identify hidden demand: Look for unmet needs or underserved groups that technology could help reach rather than simply improving existing services.
- Adopt smart solutions: Choose scalable systems and strategies that streamline business operations and make expansion sustainable.
- Track transformation: Monitor changes in engagement, performance, and satisfaction to see how technology is shaping outcomes in your organization or community.

Solid case studies are always the most rewarding to pitch - because the proof is in the results. 📊 When done right, they show how a product or service is actually helping another company grow, evolve, or hit a major business goal. They’re also GOLD for sales teams - as third-party validation still goes further than any pitch deck ever could. This one with Alaska Airlines + Staffbase is a perfect example. In their 2025 Comms Impact Study, they found that only 10% of frontline workers were satisfied with their internal communications (not surprising). Alaska Airlines tackled this head-on with a mobile-first, role-aware communications strategy. The result? A 99.5% employee engagement rate, frontline workers included. This wasn’t just a platform rollout. It was a full-on employee experience shift and a model for what’s possible when you actually meet your workforce where they are. https://lnkd.in/gfhFp-KT

Saturday Case Study - Hometown Appliance: Technology and Scaling a Local Business Jim Chandler, owner of Jim's Hometown Appliance, had a clear goal; expand from one location to three while growing his service fleet. But scaling a local business isn’t just about opening new stores. Jim faced two major challenges: ▪️ revenue tracking and forecasting, ▪️ inventory control for service operations. 💠 We started by analyzing his business and assessing the viability of expansion. 💠 We looked deeply into the available market. 💠 We took a hard look at his systems and operations to understand exactly where the disconnect in earnings was located. 💠 We analyzed his marketing, store traffic, sales closed v. traffic, determined his sales metrics; products, average purchase, and per sales person. The key to growth was implementing the right technology. ▪️ We introduced a scalable, networked POS system that allowed him to track revenue across multiple locations. ▪️ We installed a traffic monitoring system to create a true traffic count, this was also networked for all stores. ▪️ We also installed an inventory management system that connected all stores and service vans, ensuring accurate stock levels and reducing waste. With these systems in place, Jim had the tools to manage growth efficiently. Over four years, he expanded to three profitable locations and increased his service fleet to six vans. Technology didn’t just make scaling possible; it made it sustainable. Jim’s story proves that the right systems can turn a local business into a multi-location success. Even in a highly competitive market dominated by big box stores. Growth isn’t just about more customers or locations; it’s about having the tools to manage them effectively.

Just published: Another impressive collection of case studies of smart urban districts for the Atlas of Urban Tech, produced by my Cornell Tech graduate students. This spring, they've put their newfound (and AI-amplified) expertise on display in analyses of efforts including Beirut's Digital District, Lisbon's Beato District, Chongqinq's Liangjiag Collaborative Innovation Zone, the Xi’an High-tech Zone, Qianhai Smart City in Shenzhen, Xiongan New Area, Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, Zürich-West Innovation District, and more. These case studies continue to demonstrate how urban tech is transforming cities and driving positive change worldwide... https://lnkd.in/gvYeqJgw
