Why Use a Consultative Resume Writing Approach

Explore top LinkedIn content from expert professionals.

Summary

A consultative resume writing approach means working closely with a career expert to shape your resume around your unique skills, experiences, and goals, rather than just listing past job duties. By focusing on accomplishments and business impact, this method helps you position yourself strongly in the job market and attracts hiring managers’ attention.

  • Start with consultation: Talk through your career history and aspirations with a professional to discover your strongest selling points before you begin rewriting your resume.
  • Highlight achievements: Shift your resume content from everyday responsibilities to clear, measurable results and examples of how you contributed to company success.
  • Align for the market: Tailor your resume to show how your skills and experience match the needs of the roles you’re aiming for, making it easier for recruiters to see your value.

I've reviewed 2,000+ resumes in my career. The ones that get interviews? They read like business proposals, not job descriptions. Most candidates write what they did. Top performers write what they delivered. Here's the difference: Standard resume: Managed a team of 5 sales representatives Business case resume: Led 5-person sales team to 127% quota attainment, generating $2.3M in new revenue and reducing customer churn by 34% The second version answers the question Every hiring manager is asking: What will this person do for MY business? The 5-Move Framework: Converting Your Resume Into a Business Case Move 1: Frame Every Role as a Problem You Were Hired to Solve Hiring managers don't just fill seats; they solve business problems. Position yourself as the solution they were looking for. Template: [Hired/Brought in/Recruited] to [specific business challenge] after [context that shows urgency] Move 2: Use the CAR Formula (Challenge-Action-Result) in Every Bullet This is where most resumes fail. They list responsibilities, not outcomes. The CAR formula forces you to connect your work to business impact: Challenge: What problem existed? Action: What specific approach did you take? Result: What measurable outcome did you create? Move 3: Quantify Like an Analyst, Write Like a Storyteller Numbers without context are meaningless. Context without numbers is vague. Bad: Improved customer satisfaction Better: Improved customer satisfaction by 23% Best: Redesigned onboarding flow, reducing time-to-value from 14 days to 4 days, lifting NPS from 32 to 67 and cutting support tickets by 41% Move 4: Position Yourself in the "Value Chain” Not Just Your Department Recruiters hire cross-functionally. Show how your work impacted beyond your silo. Template: [Your action] → [immediate result] → [downstream business impact across departments or bottom line] Move 5: Close Each Role With a "Business Impact Summary" End every position with a 2-3 line executive summary like the "Key Wins" section in a consultant's deck. This provides busy hiring managers with a concise summary That reinforces your value even if they skim. Drop a comment below with your biggest challenge in translating your work into business outcomes. I'll respond to everyone with specific feedback. ✨ The Power of Career Consultation & Positioning ✨ Before I ever touch a CV, I always start with a career consultation. Why? Because it’s not just about rewriting documents it’s about positioning you correctly in the job market. This week, one of my clients experienced exactly that. She has 10+ years of experience and qualifications, but was stuck at R15k per month. After our consultation and repositioning strategy: ✅ She received two recruiter emails within days. ✅ One was for an Operations Manager role offering R35k per month (more than double her current salary). ✅ The other was for a Fleet Manager position where recruiters are already requesting documents. Her words to me? “Yho I’m still shocked. You really cook.” 🔥 This is the power of consultation and positioning unlocking opportunities and aligning your skills with the level you truly deserve. 💡 Don’t just apply. Position yourself first. That’s how you shift from being overlooked to being headhunted.

Creating a value proposition that is undeniable 10 interviews and 4 offers in the matter of weeks! When my client came to me, they were in the midst of an intense job search and struggling to secure meaningful interviews. Despite having solid experience in their field, their resume wasn't getting the traction it deserved. It simply listed tasks with little focus on the accomplishments and impact they had made in their previous roles. The first thing we addressed was the need for their resume to shift from a generic list of responsibilities to a clear, impactful showcase of achievements. I explained that a resume should be a story of success (career highlight)—highlighting specific accomplishments that directly align with the job description they were applying for. After all, hiring managers don’t want to hear what you did every day, they want to know how you contributed to the scope of work and company’s success. For my client, we worked to highlight their key contributions in areas such as employee relations, talent management, and organizational development. We transformed vague descriptions like “managed employee relations issues” into actionable accomplishments, such as "Successfully mediated and resolved 100+ employee grievances per year, improving team satisfaction scores by 30%." This not only demonstrated their ability to handle complex HR challenges but also showed the positive impact on the company culture and bottom line. The results were immediate. My client landed 10 interviews and received 4 job offers in a matter of weeks. They were now able to showcase their ability to manage high-output projects, such as resolving a large volume of employee relations issues, and providing quantifiable results. This strategic, methodical approach not only helped them stand out from the competition but also made their resume a powerful tool in opening doors to new opportunities. The takeaway? Your resume should be a reflection of your most significant contributions and successors and how they make you a perfect fit for the role you're applying for. Instead of just listing your duties, you need to articulate what you've achieved—and align it with the company’s needs. While this process might take a little more time, as our client learned, the results are well worth the effort.
