This section is simply awful. It is badly written, uses technical language difficult to understand, offers redundant descriptions, and contains lots of mostly-irrelevant-for-beginners information. It should be re-written from scratch.

Section needs to be re-written

Seconding the above. While I think the writing in the section is actually pretty good, the section quickly devolves into just a list of functions, which is nearly useless for learning. I would suggest that this needs to be re-written as a cogent chapter introducing a selection of the most-used functions, then giving examples and ideally some exercises.
