Why Geometry? What are the prerequisites?

Basic geometry is a very powerful practical problem solver. It was used by the ancient Egyptians and Greeks for solving most problems and was the proto-type for rational thinking. Where we use algebra today the Greeks used geometry then.*1

What should you know before attempting to teach yourself geometry from this text? Tutoring has taught me that ability with fractions is a good predictor of success in starting algebra and geometry.

Some arithmetic and simple algebra is needed, but unfortunately I haven’t found a good wikibook source that is not too advanced. Suggestions?
