Normally to leave the terminal we can do AltTab, but what about the case where the browser etc. isn't running, so there's no other window to jump to?

Well, if you didn't start the terminal in the first place you could Tab around those side panel keys just fine, Tab jumps to next, Enter selects it. So who asked you to start the terminal?

Well I already started it. My question is, when the terminal is running, how can we jump out of it, getting to the side panel buttons, where we can Tab amongst them?

Just use the trackpad.

No, I want a pure keyboard method.

What terminals are you talking about?

E.g., termina, xfce4-terminal, etc.

I wonder if xdotool, etc. could jump out and push non-Linux buttons.

  • Did you try Ctrl-D or exit to quit whatever shell is running in the terminal? Commented Dec 4 at 13:26
  • Yes, that will work, but, well, you know, I sort of like having a terminal still running, as I use it all the time. Commented Dec 5 at 5:55

In the terminal do

$ garcon-url-handler https://example.net

Voilà, the browser is now running and you can jump out of the terminal with AltTab. Case closed.

Thanks, but I still can't get to the side panel buttons without resorting to the trackpad.

Sorry about that.
