Looking back, really far back, I’m pretty sure that baseball helmets from Baskin Robins might have been my first foray into building a collection. Or at least unsuccessfully trying to. In 1988, there were a total of 26 teams in the MLB. Baskin Robbins offered all of them. My big brother, BB, encouraged me to select the helmets that I liked, which back then, was based entirely on logos and color combinations. Unfortunately, a five-year-old lacks the financial means to complete such a collection, leaving me with only a handful of helmets to show for my failed efforts.   Looking beyond BR and the stadiums themselves, Dairy Queen has done their fair share of helmet selling as well. But DQ, much like their nearly nonexistent flavor selection, would only have a limited number of helmets available. And I’m sorry, but no one is eating ice cream out of an Atlanta Braves helmet in 1988. Why must I be made to? 😡 But in 2025 let’s put the plastic aside. Big boys eat their ice cream out of ceramic bowls and uncommongoods is clearly aware of this. And while I personally could have done without the tacky scoop slogan, the fact that they include two as a set makes it something I’m willing to overlook. And for the record: My Dad’s calories don’t need to be kept in check.
