I have the D1 MINI ESP32 board which shall be battery powered in my project. For this I am experimenting with deep sleep to conserve power as much as possible.

While the ESP should only take microamps to keep the RTC for wakeup events, my focus shifts to the two LEDs on the board. A blue one can be controlled via GPIO 2 - it is the builtin LED. But then there is a red one, lighting up whenever I connect power.

Thanks to the comments I checked the schematics at https://github.com/yo3hjv/ESP32_D1_Mini_ExpansionBoard_v2/blob/main/Schematic_ESP32-WEMOS_D1_Mini_Expansion_Board_2024-05-01.pdf

So the blue LED that I can control is labelled LED0. And I find another LED1 in the power section that seems hardwired between +5V and GND. If that is the case there is no chance to turn it off.

Question 1: Do I read correctly?

Question 2: What ESP32 boards exist that come without such an LED?

  • \$\begingroup\$ Hi! And Welcome here! Wemos D1 are ESP8266, not ESP32 devices. Are you cooperating with this asker? It's rather unusual for two unrelated people in such short time get their basic research wrong in such a similar way; on the same obsolete hardware, no less! \$\endgroup\$ Commented 4 hours ago
  • \$\begingroup\$ The Wemos boards have schematics, directly linked from the wemos website. They answer your question; please consult the primary sources when they're so accessible before asking a question! \$\endgroup\$ Commented 4 hours ago
  • \$\begingroup\$ (please do consult the schematics and refine your question based on that, if a question remains! We love to help you here, but looking at the schematics of a device you want to modify is so clearly the first step to do that we really can't take it off your shoulders) \$\endgroup\$ Commented 4 hours ago
  • \$\begingroup\$ @MarcusMüller I have Wemos D1 Mini with ESP8266 here, but this question is about a board with ESP32. \$\endgroup\$ Commented 4 hours ago
  • \$\begingroup\$ then it's not about the Wemos D1 at all, so please fix your question's text. \$\endgroup\$ Commented 3 hours ago

I don't think I have ever seen a devboard that doesn't have power indicating LED. You can always just safely desolder it if it's hardwired between GND and 5V which is probably the case.
